Wonderful ride!
Wonderful rode on the Joy Rails in Chehalis
What an incredible experience! Ben (the owner) and his crew were fantastic guides, leading us on a 10-mile pedal rail car ride through the gorgeous backlands of Chehalis. The route follows an old Northern Pacific Railway line that once carried countless logs into the Centralia and Chehalis mills, fueling the region’s booming timber industry. Today, that same track has a second life—part of it is used by the local railroad museum for historic train rides during the day, and in the evening it transforms into a truly unique adventure with Joyrails’ pedal cars.

The ride had everything—rolling through peaceful forests, crossing historic trestle bridges, spotting wildlife, and even stopping to pick wild blackberries and apples right from the trackside. Pedaling along at a steady 7mph (with the option to go faster if you like), you’re part of a small group of cars spread out along the line, which gives everyone room to slow down, soak up the views, and enjoy the history beneath your wheels.

The whole journey took about an hour and a half, but we were never in a rush. Between the golden sunset, the fresh air, and the feeling of riding a piece of history, it was unforgettable. Pro tip: bring smaller water bottles (the cup holders are snug), and if you’re in the front seats, you can’t hang a backpack like you can in the back seats.

This is absolutely family-friendly, safe, and FUN for all ages. Huge thanks to Ben and his crew for keeping this history alive in such a creative way. We travel full-time in our RV with our kids and share our family adventures online, and this was easily one of the highlights of our Pacific Northwest trip.
